The benefits of play based learning

Did you know that children actually learn a lot when they’re playing? Studies have shown there is a long list of benefits to play-based learning in the early years, including the development of intellectual skills, thinking and motivation.

During the first five years of a child’s life their brain is growing faster than ever. “We know through research that children engaged in play are strengthening neural pathways in the brain, which is both powerful and positive for future outcomes,” says Fiona Young, who leads up educational programming and training nationally.

Each time a child explores and experiences something new, new pathways are formed and strengthened. Play during the early years enhances flexibility of the brain which is required for future learning, meaning a child at play will build a love of lifelong learning sooner.

So what are quality play-based learning experiences?

We believe that play-based learning is all about discovery.

Fiona goes on to say “Play-based learning is a way in which children can make sense of the world around them. They research, explore and develop their own understanding of how things work; sometimes in a physical way, other times emotionally.”

Play can involve anything from arts and crafts, to building blocks and toys, role playing and imaginary games, running around outdoors and in the playground, counting, reading or music. The only limit is your child’s imagination.

Playing offers a world of possibilities for children to develop curiosity, openness, optimism, resilience, memory, concentration, creativity, negotiation and problem-solving – all great attributes that build great future learners.

How do our educators support your child with play-based learning?

At Lifelong Learning Centres, our educators encourage opportunities for children to learn through play, identifying and building on each child’s unique interests and skills. This creates deeper engagement and enjoyment for all children.

Our centres are wonderful places to play and learn. Educators take great care and pride in setting up safe, secure and stimulating environments where children are motivated to explore, challenge themselves and try out their own ideas.

Next time your child is playing, take a few moments to just sit and watch them. You will be amazed to see the little moments of magic!
